The main purpose of GEO is the implementation of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). GEOSS is designed with nine Societal Benefit Areas (SBAs) in mind. These areas, which were identify by the second Earth Observation Summit, cover a wide range of activities that can benefit from improved Earth observations.
