Format of the GGOS Planning Meeting

The Planning Meeting separates into three main parts:

  • GGOS Status, Implementation, Products and Infrastructure
  • GGOS contribution to three themes
  • GGOS/IAG/GIC Organizational Aspects

In the first part, the current status will be reviewed briefly, and general thoughts concerning the implementation of GGOS 2020, GGOS products, and GGOS infrastructure will be presented. This part will set the stage for the rest of the Planning Meeting.

The main part of the Planning Meeting will be organized around three themes. These themes are

  • Theme 1: Global Unified Height System;
  • Theme 2: Geohazards;
  • Theme 3: Sea-level change, variability and forecasting.
In a plenary sessions, these themes will be introduced. The Theme leads are asked to provide an abstracts (up to two page), in which they sketch the theme objectives and goals, identify relevant GGOS infrastructure today (observations, data processing, and products); outline the current status, in particular the gaps, and give initial future requirements. In particular, it will be important to outline what GGOS could do to accomplish the theme goals and objectives. In the plenary session, themes will be introduced in 20-30 presentations followed by 15-20 minutes of discussion.

The themes will then be discussed in detail in parallel breakout sessions. For these sessions, rapporteurs will be identified, who will report the results back to the plenary. All participants are expected to participate in a particular theme.

The Theme Leads and Teams are asked to identify synergies and engage with IAG Commissions, Sub-commissions and study groups. In the breakout sessions, focus should be on discussion of what infrastructure is needed including core network, ground components, additional elements, data processing, product generation, space component, analyses, modeling and so forth. Needs for further studies should be identified. Ideas towards implementation should be developed.

The output of the breakout sessions will be reported and discussed in a plenary session. The goal is to develop an initial roadmap describing specific activities leading to the implementation of the themes. Another plenary session will consider GGOS infrastructure, data and information system, website, portal in response to the requirements identified by the themes.

The final part of the Planning Meeting will discuss aspects of internal governance of GGOS as well as relations to external organizations. A focus will be on the relation of GGOS/IAG to interagency or intergovernmental organizations. The discussion will aim to identify steps that would benefit GGOS for long-term stability of infrastructure, and a discussion of the relationship between GGOS, IAG and the GGOS Intergovernmental Planning Committee will aim to clarify roles, responsibilities, and interactions.
